The Holiday Season is Stressing Me Out
Right now it’s the holiday season and it’s stressing me out. I work at the mall and like my job, but this is the worst time of the year to be working there. I’m naturally a happy person but it’s hard. Walking into the mall and seeing my friends and all the lights and cheer is awesome. Then I get to my store and customers are so cranky (to put it nicely). They act like it’s my fault that we don’t have the sweater they want in their size. Or that I can’t make the line go faster. I’m always nice to them no matter how they treat me, but inside I’m stressing. Help me make it through this holiday season.
We feel for you! The holiday season is rough when you work in retail. People are usually in a rush, which can make them impatient and cranky. It can be hard to stay nice and cheery.
Unfortunately, this is how the holiday season goes. If you work retail, November and December are going to be crazy. You can’t magically make people less cranky (although that would be an amazing superpower). What you can do is find ways to make it better for you.
Handling the holiday season
Drink plenty of water and eat snacks
Staying hydrated and eating a granola bar or piece of candy helps keep you awake. It helps ward off headaches and recharge you. Feeling energized makes it easier to handle whatever might come your way.
Take your breaks
Getting away for even a few minutes can help you de-stress.
Wear comfortable shoes
Wait…this needs repeating. Wear comfortable shoes. Forget fashion this time of year. Instead, keep your feet comfortable. The more your feet hurt, the more cranky people will irritate you.
Remember it’s not your fault
It’s not your fault that the line is long. It’s not your fault that the store is out of their size. It’s not your fault if someone gets mad and walks away.
You are only one person. You can only wait on one person at a time. Remind yourself that you are doing the best you can.
Enjoy the happy people
There are plenty of happy customers. Sometimes the not so nice ones make you forget. Focus on the nice.
Let it go
Leave whatever craziness happened at work, at work. Don’t dwell on it.
I have worked retail during the insane holiday season for several years. It always helps me to remember my friends at work are going through the same thing. They understand the struggle. Laughing at the craziness and having fun with them helps! We are all in this together.
Soak your feet
A good foot soak can take days’ worth of stress away.
Get some takeout, or just chill out to your favorite movie.
Crazy hours don’t help with sleep but get it when you can.
Don’t take anything negative personally. It’s not about you, it’s about whatever is going on in their life. It will end. December will turn into January. So just do your best to stay stress-free!
